Galway County Building Visit: Portumna Workhouse

Portumna Workhouse opened in 1851. Built to a standard plan designed by George Wilkinson, it remained in operation until 1922 when the new state was founded. A conservation and restoration project has been carried out over recent years focusing on bringing the building back into use, allowing visitors to experience the atmosphere of the place combined with providing new community facilities. The tour will focus on recent work, especially energy efficiency in traditional building.
